  5. Germins [1] are a family  of  homopentameric cereal  proteins expressed during
  6. germination which may play a role in  altering  the  properties  of cell walls
  7. during germinative growth.
  8.  
  9. Slime mold   spherulins  are  proteins  that  accumulate  specifically  during
  10. spherulation,  a  process  induced  by  various  forms of environmental stress
  11. which leads to encystment and dormancy. The sequence of two of these proteins,
  12. spherulins 1a and 1b, is related to that of germins.

  14. It is proposed [1]  that  this  family of  proteins is  involved  in cell-wall
  15. responses to dessication, hydration and osmotic stress.

  17. As a signature pattern  we  selected the  best conserved region: a decapeptide
  18. located in the central section of these proteins.
