- * Germin family signature *
- ***************************
-
- Germins [1] are a family of homopentameric cereal proteins expressed during
- germination which may play a role in altering the properties of cell walls
- during germinative growth.
-
- Slime mold spherulins are proteins that accumulate specifically during
- spherulation, a process induced by various forms of environmental stress
- which leads to encystment and dormancy. The sequence of two of these proteins,
- spherulins 1a and 1b, is related to that of germins.
-
- It is proposed [1] that this family of proteins is involved in cell-wall
- responses to dessication, hydration and osmotic stress.
-
- As a signature pattern we selected the best conserved region: a decapeptide
- located in the central section of these proteins.
-
- -Consensus pattern: P-H-x-H-P-R-A-T-E-I
- -Sequences known to belong to this class detected by the pattern: ALL.
- -Other sequence(s) detected in SWISS-PROT: NONE.
- -Last update: December 1992 / First entry.
